Words of Wisdom

Advice to the struggling student and their parents.

1)  DO NOT BLAME THE TEACHER.  Many students think I am an awesome teacher and many emphatically disagree.

The bottom line is that it is up to the student to succeed either because of or despite the teacher.

You cannot change how your teacher teaches, you can only change how YOU learn.  Get your "eyes on the prize."  That is, you need to learn the course material and get good grades.  Once you focus on the goal rather than the perceived problem, you have a chance to succeed.

You will have many good teachers and a series of bad teachers.  Both have something to teach besides the course material.

The good teacher will give you the confidence that you can succeed.

The bad teacher will teach you how to learn independently - because that is the choice you will be given.  You can learn on your own or not succeed.

I have a friend who is a great teacher, but I cannot learn in his class.  He teaches verbally and I learn visually.  I am an excellent learner and he is an excellent teacher, but for some reason we do not connect.  I cannot change his teaching techinque or my learning style.

The solution:  I take notes when we are working together.  I create my own visual form for his verbal communication.

You have the ability to find the solution to any problem.  The solution involves your reaction to the problem.  If you blame others, you will be stuck in the problem.  If you acknowledge the problem and determine what YOU can do to change your behavior or your perception, you will win.
